2018/19 Tax Year Key Dates

Yes, another new tax year begins and we hope it finds you in good financial health. Let’s keep it that way by embedding HMRC’s key dates into your calendar now.

A few dates are for all taxpayers and some only apply to either self employed or PAYE taxpayers; so that’s how we’ve organised the information. Skim through, find the information that’s relevant to you and plan accordingly.

2018/2019 tax year key dates for everyone

6th April 2018:

  • New financial (tax) year begins
  • Personal Allowance and tax band adjustments are applied. Everyone should check their new tax code is correct

5th April 2019

  • Tax year ends

2018/2019 employed PAYE taxpayers’ key dates

6th April 2018

  • 2013/14 PAYE tax rebate submission deadline
  • A claim for the a PAYE tax rebate can be made for the 2017/2018 tax year
  • If you haven’t already open up your personal tax account with HMRC online

31st May 2018

  • Make sure your employer has given you your 2017/18 P60 certificate

6th July 2018

  • Check you received your 2017/18 P11d form from your employer
  • Deadline for resolving 2017/18 payment settlement agreements

31st October 2018

2018/2019 self employed taxpayers’ key dates

If you are self employed different deadlines can apply so we have listed below some of the most popular tax dates for a self employed individual.

31st January 2018

  • Payment on account deadline for 2017/18 tax year

5th April 2018

  • Self assessment claims for a tax rebate for 2013/14 tax year deadline

6th April 2018

31st May 2018

  • If you have employees, this is the deadline for issuing them with their 2017/18 P60

31st July 2018

  • Second payment on account deadline for 2017/18 tax year

5th October 2018

  • Deadline to submit form SA1 to declare income from property
  • Deadline to submit form CWF1 to register as self employed

31st October 2018

30th December 2018

  • If you owe up to £3,000 in tax you can ask HMRC to collect it through your PAYE tax code. This is the submission deadline for such requests relating to 2016/17 tax year.

31st January 2019

  • 2017/18 self assessment tax returns must be received by midnight on this date, if you are submitting online
  • Deadline for 2017/17 tax bill payment

Why should I think about all these deadlines now?

In the middle of your hectic daily work schedule, it may not seem important to give any headspace to a deadline coming up in January. But there’s not just the deadline to consider; there’s the preparation for the deadline. Fix the date in your diary, then plan backwards for everything you need to do before then. If you’re not sure of all the details, now is the time to find out. For example, having a cumulative, organised approach to paperwork makes submitting your tax return a much more efficient process.

You know you’re not going to miss an HMRC deadline because you are fully committed to not wasting your hard earned cash on unnecessary fines. But you can also make your life much less stressful by taking time to think through your financial year and asking any necessary questions now. We’re here and ready to jump in with the answers.
