What do I need to provide HMRC with when I’m leaving the UK?

Many people ask the question, “What do I need to give to the HMRC if leaving the UK?” No one wants to leave the UK without settling affairs with the HMRC.

Luckily, you could actually be entitled to tax relief or a tax rebate if you ensure your tax affairs are in order before you leave. Here’s what you need to know to ensure you’re leaving the UK with a clean tax slate.

How do I tell HMRC that I am leaving the UK?

You tell HMRC that you are leaving the UK using the form that is relevant to your specific situation and the supporting documentation. This depends entirely on your particular position.

HMRC are most likely to require the following:

  • Self Assessment tax return for the self employed, company directors, landlords, some employed and all self-employed taxpayers  (you are probably already in the Self Assessment system). If you are not required to complete a tax return you will need to submit a P85 form.
  • Form P85, Leaving the UK getting your tax right, if you are employed or claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance. Will contain all the information needed to work out any tax rebate you are owed and if you will become non-resident for tax purposes.
  • P45 parts 2 and 3 must be sent with your P85. A ‘statement of earnings’ from your employer will be accepted in its stead, if you have lost the original.
  • P60 end of year information.
  • Evidence to support tax relief claims such as receipts, log books, etc.
