What do the numbers and letters actually mean?

The basic tax free personal allowance for the tax year ending 5th April 2014 is £9445. This means that the amount of income you can earn before paying tax is £9445. So, your tax code contains your relevant Personal Allowance amount.

When do I get my new tax code?

Your tax code is usually changed at the start of each tax year, because the basic tax free personal allowance is often changed by the government in each year’s budget. It is normal for HMRC to send a notice of coding to both you and your employer, which explains any changes.

Is my tax code correct?

There are lots of reasons why your tax code can change, for example having a company benefit like a company car. Not everyone will have a basic 944L tax code so checking to see if your tax code is correct is a good idea. An incorrect tax code has two possible results; either HMRC owes you overpaid tax back, or you end up indebted to them for an underpayment of tax.

So, checking your tax code can also lead to the welcome discovery that you are entitled to a tax rebate.
